Synopsis
Anxiety comes in many shapes and sizes. PTSD, OCD, Separation Anxiety, Selective Mutism, Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Specific Phobias will all be addressed using practical, fun and empirically informed play therapy strategies. A clinically sound, components based approach will offer practitioners flexibility and creativity. You will leave with many NEW TOOLS and TECHNIQUES for fighting the many faces of fear in our clients.
Abstract
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States. About
13 in every 100 children experiences some sort of anxiety disorder (SAMHSA). While
some children seem to have a temperamental predisposition to anxiety, anxiety in
others is situationally induced. Children's fears also change by age and developmental
level and can be exacerbated by a parent's own anxiety or a caregiver's reactions
to the child's anxiety. There is consensus in the literature that cognitive-
1) PTSD
2) OCD
3) Separation Anxiety
4) Selective Mutism
5) Specific Phobias
6) Generalized Anxiety Disorder.
Specific play therapy techniques will be augmented by case examples, video clips, slides of children's completed therapeutic creations and experiential learning.
Learning Objectives
After the session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the unique aspects of three anxiety based disorders.
2. Articulate three play therapy stress inoculation techniques.
3. Describe the role that parents play in helping children with their anxiety.
4. List five play therapy interventions that help clients identify and restructure anxiety based cognitive distortions.

Visitors to the Bruno Conference Center should park in the North Tower parking deck. Additional parking is available in the Women’s & Children’s Center parking deck. Parking fees of approximately $4.00/day will apply. Participants will be responsible for all parking fees. Parking fees are subject to change without notice.
Lunch
Bruno Conference Center is conveniently located between the Downtown and Homewood areas of Birmingham. Participants will have one and a half hours for lunch and may choose from two cafeterias (onsite) or other local restaurants. Participants should be aware that they are welcome to drive to local restaurants for lunch, but additional parking fees will likely be charged.
